The PokerStars internet poker room is renowned around the world, and there’s now a New Jersey version of the site, fully approved of by the authorities of the state. Check out our video above to see what microstakes NL Texas Hold’em cash gameplay is like at the PokerStars NJ online poker platform.

The global PokerStars website is the most popular in the world for online card games, and there was therefore much anticipation in New Jersey when the firm opened up its state-licensed version in 2020. There are ring games, sit n’ gos, and tournaments for players to participate in.

The No Limit Hold’em tables are listed between $0.01/$0.02 and $25/$50, and these same stakes are spread for Pot Limit Omaha as well. Other games displayed in the cash game lobby include PLO/8, Razz, 5 Card Omaha (Big O), and 8-game.

Yet, despite this amazing breadth in games and stakes offered, there are only a few that attract regular action. NLHE can be found up to about $2.50/$5.00 on a daily basis along with PLO up to $1/$2. The high-stakes tables that you might have sat in or railed on the worldwide ‘Stars site run but infrequently here, and lesser-known formats of poker are rarely played.

Still, we have to hand PokerStars NJ deserved kudos for replicating its well-rated gaming client for the New Jersey market. The desktop software is as slick and error-free as you may have remembered with the familiar table layout and sounds that have proven a hit with the poker community. For a sample of what to expect, simply watch the above video of a $0.05/$0.10 6-max NL Hold’em cash game table.

There’s also a mobile client that can be accessed from iOS and Android machines. Unlike some of its competitors, PokerStars has incorporated robust support for virtually its entire card gaming menu into this software for smart devices.

Beyond the cash games, you can also join Sit n’ Gos here although the only format offered is heads-up hyperturbos in PLO and NLHE. Perhaps more interesting are the Spin & a type of lottery poker where the prize pool is chosen randomly and can reach as high as 1,200 times the amount you paid to enter.

The MTT lobby at ‘Stars New Jersey is full of contests for both high and low buyin amounts. However, customers expecting to partake in Sunday Million-sized guarantees are bound to be disappointed; the largest weekly guarantee available is the $30,000 that’s up for grabs in the Sunday Special. There simply isn’t a large enough player base in New Jersey to achieve 7- or even 6-figure prize pools on a regular basis.

PokerStars rewards newcomers to its NJ system with a 100% up to $600 bonus that kicks back an impressive 50% rakeback as it’s cleared over a period of up to four months. Alternately, you can get $30 of poker freeplays with a small deposit of just $20.

The rewards program here is centered around chests. As you generate rake and pay tournament fees, you’ll progress toward a points target, and when you hit it, you’ll get a chest that contains a randomized selection of goodies, like free plays and cash. This system has been criticized not only for its opacity because it’s unknown how the personalized point targets are decided, but also because it’s much inferior to the previous PokerStars VIP Club for the majority of users.

Making a deposit at PokerStars NJ is easy because there are quite a few payment channels available. Most users will wish to transact with the prominent e-wallet PayPal, but credit cards, Neteller, Skrill, and several other methods can be used too. When it’s time to withdraw your winnings, you can send them back to your e-wallet account, request an e-check, pick up your cash in person at Resorts Casino in Atlantic City, or have it sent to a PokerStars Play+ card.

Though some may appreciate the fully featured cashier and gaming software provided by the New Jersey ‘Stars site, others lament the lack of player traffic and paltry tournament guarantees. For those folk who are underwhelmed with PokerStars, they have recourse to offshore poker sites, many of which have the wherewithal to boast higher player counts and bigger games.
